This little guy already has a heart for the gospel. For Christ. For sharing the gospel of Christ with others. He's bold. He has a passion that in untamed by fear of rejection or ridicule and will tell anyone who will listen about Christ.

Jesse and I talk about how much he talks sometimes... it does seem to be never ending. But, much of his talk is about Christ. His passion reminds me of Andrew. He doesn't wait until he knows everything about Christ... he waits long enough to realize who Christ is and then he's off to tell his brother.

Be Mine {Friday Favorites}

It's been a while since I've done Friday Favorites, and what can I say? Apparently, I'm in the mood to get ready for Valentine's Day!

Last year, I made a Valentine's Day Friday Favorite's list for my husband to get gift ideas for me... and then I was a stinker when I didn't get a single thing from the list. Even though he did get me some nice things! I'm such a brat.

This year, my collection is more broad... there may be a thing or two on here I'd like for my little girl instead. :) We'll see what happens!

Any favorite books or movies you'd suggest for the 14th? I'd love to hear your ideas!

What I'd Tell You

If you came over today, I'd tell you that I've officially started using cloth diapers yesterday. The entire 5 that I own. Which doesn't last the entire day. But I've got more on the way. So, soon.

I would tell you, I'm feeling fairly good about the whole thing but that I probably did 20 hours of research before I got started. And I really wish that I knew someone who was using the pocket diapers like mine to shop me step-by-step their own process. The whole yucky-messy thing.

If you were here, I wouldn't have to tell you that the house is a mess. It's not as horrible as it has been in the past month. But it's not great, and I really need to get it back under control before it becomes a uncontrollable monster again. But! The Christmas decorations are put away... always good!

I'd tell you that Cruz is walking now. And climbing everything. Making little step-stools out of anything he can. And he gets really mad about not being allowed to get and touch and climb whatever he so desires.

My big kids, I'd tell you, are learning the books of the Bible, and read the story of the Tower of Babel today. And then built a tower. The directions said to use little balls of clay and toothpicks. But we used toothpicks and mini-marshmallows. Because it sounded yummier. And they liked it more. And now (at 6:05) their disassembling it and eating the marshmallows as a pre-dinner treat. Because that's how we're rolling today.

Waking Up

I laid down beside Eliana today for a few minutes to encourage her to fall asleep. She's been fighting the naps she still desperately needs. (It doesn't make for pleasant outings in the evening when she immediately crashes the second we leave the house.) An hour later, I came down the stairs to realize Diego wasn't here. Fortunately, Jesse wasn't either and I was hoping they'd left together. A phone call and some relief to know they'd both headed out to Autozone made my mama's heart calm down from all the what-ifs that floated about.

Honestly, I'm tired. I've been somewhat of an insomniac lately. I find myself ready to climb into bed at 9:30 (instead of midnight), but then I wake up at 2, and 3, and 4:30... at which time I finally give up and pull our Jane Eyre. I finished the last several chapters this morning all before the kids woke up.

My cell phone hadn't been charged since late December... my pastor mentioned me not replying to a text he'd sent. Whoops! I confessed I hadn't used that thing in weeks. He mentioned something about feeling free... yes, yes, I do when I don't have it. Yesterday, Jesse charged it for me and I spent a good deal of time listening to phone messages. (Good thing most people know my home phone, but still...) I've yet to receive several texts that were sent over the past few weeks.

I'm determined to write again. To do something with my shop in the next few weeks. Sorry I've been gone so much, but I find myself still waking up...

And So It Begins

For over a year now, I've been waiting to see my *ahem* relative try her cloth diapers to decide whether or not I should give it a go. I'm still waiting. So, then my relative-in-law (ya'll know who you are!) bought some. I think she used 'em a bit with her older one but still hasn't tried them with little one who is now almost two months old and although I've asked for a review of how she likes them... I'm still waiting. *sigh* I'm sure she's doing nothing else but sitting around eating bon-bons all day.

And then my little man started breaking out while using one of the two major brands that I've always trusted. So, I switched him back to the other brand (even though I've noticed they've recently raised their prices, again)... and still the break-outs now and then. Something must be done. If not for the rashes for the sheer cost of it all. I seriously calculated that we spend somewhere between 40 and 60 bucks on diapers and wipes a month. Yikes!

So, I've bought 5... yes, I know that's not enough... bumGenius. 4 of the 4.0 and 1 of the all-in-one organic. And now? I'm trying to figure out what to wash them with... I think I've decided on Charlie's Soap. I honestly am excited and terrified at the same time. I'm hoping that it goes well, they don't leak, and that I'm consistent enough to keep it up. I think that if it does, and if they don't, and if I am then I could be a super money saving hero! And that (here's another hope), it might help someone else wake up at night while wearing 'em and not still be wet at night. We shall see.

I plan on starting at nights and then if they hold up well, I'll buy more of the same type... and if not I may peruse other brands.

SO, here's to my start of a journey. Any suggestions on the subject are, of course, welcome!

Yeah, So Maybe

Yeah, so maybe I've already posted about New Year's.

So maybe, I should just move forward from there.

So maybe, I should have shared Christmas a week ago.

But, here it is anyway.

A smattering of photos. We had lovely times. We had some really gross times.

We had a night or two where Jesse slept in one room with the big kids and I slept in another with the baby so we could help them "quickly" when necessary.

We may have infected everyone around us. It was the gift that keeps on giving.

It was a tired Christmas. But even with the sickness --it was good.

We were together. No one was in the hospital. No one was away fighting a war.

And our God came down and loved on us... in the midst of the sick, of the tired, of the weary.

Rock the Clock

Diego and I made the piñata that we found in the Babiekins Magazine... it honestly was the fastest piñata I've ever made... mainly because it was made out of an gift box and there was no papier-mâché involved. I'm guessing all told it took about an hour and a half. We followed the instructions loosely and used old hymnal pages for the the white and gold tissue paper instead of craft paper for the circumference. I also pulled out Jesse's hot glue gun... which made it very fast to place on the paper.

We made ours a pull string in pinata because we didn't really think it was necessary to beat it to death for our 3-child party. Filled with raisins and fruit snacks because we have chocolate coming out our ears. Thank you Santa. And Yaya and Grandpa. And Jason and Wendy. My kids love you.

We started the evening going to look at the lights at Botanica with my sister and her family. (Of course, I left my camera at home! Gah!) It wasn't too cold, but the wind had picked up considerably so I'm glad I'd bundled the kids well. The lights were okay and the kids enjoyed them. But my favorite part of the night was Diego dancing down the walk to Mannheim Steamroller. Hilarious. Forever I will have his funny dance ingrained in my memory whenever I hear their music!

After a dinner of fried rice, we tried to take our last family portrait of the year around the dinner table. This is as good as it got. :)

Then time to "break" the piñata. The kids were thrilled and perfectly happy with the evening. And by 10:30 everyone (yes, the adults too) were snuggled in bed and on their way to dreamland. Staying up until midnight is highly over-rated... who am I kidding, this is me the night owl we're talking about. I have no idea why I wasn't up until 2, but I'll take it. Perhaps I'll turn a new leaf in 2012 and learn to go to bed at a normal time. Only time shall see!

Hope your New Year's celebration was just as special... and that you rang in 2012 appropriately for all of us sleepyheads!

I've been pondering over this year. The end of this year's been many trials, much loss. For me and my family. There's been good, too. But this year is closing on a rather sour note. It's okay. I know He has a plan. What is it? More of the same?

Then this verse came to me. It's like God was telling me to "See." His plan is not for us to dwell on what 2011 has been, but look forward to the new and what He is creating. In our lives, in our shattered dreams, in the wilderness, in the broken promises, in the wastelands of our hearts. He is doing a new thing. And I can't wait!

Happy 2012, everyone... I look forward to sharing it with you!

A Little Celebration

People have been sick, I'm up to my eyeballs in dirty laundry, and our Christmas was definitely not my favorite. I think my entire family is demanding a redo. Not the gifts... thank goodness! But just a time to come and spend together with one another. I look forward to it.

I "remade" clothes for the kids for Christmas... my nieces, nephews, and my own. Some of the items were vintage... some were not. Pretty much everything was thrifted except Diego's pants which he already owned.

I was hoping that my kids would wear their outfits to church on Sunday, but we ended up spending the day in pj's. All of us. That's how we roll.

Since we're feeling better today, I thought I'd let 'em dress up and at least celebrate the fact that our tummies are feeling better... our spirits are, too!

We are looking forward to the New Year... I think we'll celebrate with just our little family. We may make this piñata tomorrow, if I can get my act together and get the form made tonight. We shall see.

It's good to be back in the swing of things... we are blessed. And the past five days have made us even more aware of all of God's goodness to us. Even in the hard times.

Merry Christmas

We were looking forward to celebrating Christ's birth at church and with family today, but unfortunately a stomach bug that kept us up most of the night has changed our plans. We'll be staying at home and reading lots of "Baby Jesus Books" as they are often called here. Yet, Christ is merciful to us still. We have a warm home and know His peace and joy despite any circumstances.

Wherever you are today, we pray that you reflect and welcome God's great gift to the world, the Christ-Child. Born to die and set us free from the bondage of our sins... He loved us first with a great love, so that we might love Him. Merry Christmas!

With What

We’ve been created with a God-shaped hole in our beings that can only be filled and satisfied with Him. The question we must ask ourselves this season isn’t, “Will I try to fill the void within me?” But rather, “With whom or what will I try to fill that void?”

Will I spend my time lovingly adorning my home with Christmas decorations for my friends to admire? Or will I choose to spend my time relishing how my great God lovingly came down from Heaven in the form of a helpless babe? Will I spend my time dwelling on fining the perfect gifts for my family? Or will I spend time with the greatest Gift ever given?

To be honest, too often it is easy for me to fill up my time with things that are temporal instead of eternal. I can easily get caught up in the party and forget all about the birthday Boy. But that’s not how I want to celebrate this year. I don’t want to crowd my life with “Christmas” and find myself at the end of Advent unsatisfied because I didn’t look to the only One who can fill me completely.

Prepare

I've been busy preparing. Preparing cookies, presents, books, decorations, etc. But what does Mark tell me in chapter one, verse three? "Prepare ye the way of the Lord." Here's a reminder to us all to prepare our hearts for the Lord this Advent season. Take some special extra time this weekend to prepare your heart for Him and what He's telling you. You'll be glad you did!

13 Christmas Stories to Prepare Little Hearts for Advent

I told you I'd share some of our favorite Christ centered Christmas books with you... finally, I'm ready to do so. I'll start in age order and tell you what I (or we) love about each.

Who is Coming to Our House? by Joseph Slate. I love the simplicity of this book... beautiful animal illustrations by Wolff keep the littlest ones' attention. The animals prepare the stable for the arrival of Christ, it's great way to start conversations about preparing our hearts for Christmas. Very basic language-- which also makes it a great for emerging readers.

Nighty Night, Baby Jesus by Molly Schaar Idle. I love the illustrations. Not heavy on theology, more about animals, but still gives some basics of the story of Christmas. Good for little ones just learning about Christmas.

Room for a Little One: A Christmas Tale by Martine Waddell. Lovely illustrations by Cockcroft a story of animals welcoming each other to the stable, and then welcoming the baby to the stable. I love the thread of compassion that runs it's way through this story and how that can be a jumping off point to discuss compassionate acts to others. I also love that it ends with the line: "a Little One came for the world." I think that's a great way to begin discussing why Christ came to earth.

The Stable Where Jesus Was Born by Rhonda Gowler Greene. There's a sweetness in the sing-songy verses of the story. Honestly, I love that the characters in this story (illustrated by Gaber) don't look European, which is found very often in Christmas stories... although, I believe that's not the case as often as it has been in the past.

Christmas Night: Fair and Bright by Stiegemeyer. Honestly, at first I judged the book by the cover... or at least the title. But through the rhymes of this book, it tells why Christ came, with sentences such as: "In Him God's rescue has begun. He's Jesus, born for us." and "Born our Savior, born to cry, born to suffer, born to die. All our sin on Him will lie, on Jesus , born for us." I love this book for preschoolers and early elementary age and think it's a must for your Christmas library!

The Christmas Story by Jane Werner. I'll admit it, I'm a sucker for Eloise Wilkin's work... I love her illustrations and she's well known for her work for A Little Golden Book. Werner's story seems to be more a paraphrase of scriptures written for little ones. Easily understandable but very close to Luke's and Matthew's accounts.

Great Joy by Kate DiCamillo. Beautiful illustrations by Ibatoulline, this books tells the story of a little girl who reaches out to a homeless man. I love this story because I think it's great way to start conversation about sharing our faith and the joy of Christ with others.

The Nativity by Julie Vivas. The text is taken straight from KJV which makes it a bit more difficult for little ones to understand... especially if they are not yet familiar with the Christmas story. However, my favorite part of this story is the illustrations. Beautiful, strikingly different, I love Gabriel's boots and Mary's clothesline! Be advised that baby Jesus is completely nude and definitely a boy. No big deal in this house with a baby boy of our own, but I suppose may bring questions if you have a household of all girls.

Santa's Favorite Story by Hisako Aoki. Santa tells the story of Christ's birth in this beautifully illustrated book. I love how Santa tells the animals that Christmas has nothing to do with him.

The Crippled Lamb by Max Lucado. Joshua, the lamb is heart-broken when he is left in the stable and is unable to go with the other sheep to another pasture. His friend, the cow keeps reminding him that: "God has a special place for those who feel left out." On Christmas, he is able to keep the baby warm in the stable and Joshua understands his purpose and special place is to warm the newborn king.

King of the Stable by Melody Carlson. When Matthew has to leave his father's fine house and go live with his uncle who is an inn keeper, he feels alone. Instead of being served, he is placed in charge of the stable. When Jesus, the King of Heaven is born in his stable, he understands how much Christ must have given up for him.

Mary's First Christmas by Walter Wangerin Jr. Beautifully illustrated by Ladwig, the story is told from Mary's perspective as she relating it to Jesus. Broken up into four chapters, it would be great to read a chapter every Advent Sunday or just the few days leading up to Christmas.

The Best Christmas Pageant Ever by Barbara Robinson. Perfect for upper-elementary, I used to read this book to my public school students because I could get away with it. Ahem. When the Herdmans, a wild and just plain mean family of children, decide to bully their way into the pivotal roles of the Christmas pageant, everyone is quick to assume the entire pageant will be a complete and total disaster. But as the Herdmans hear the Christmas Story for the first time, their hearts are softened by the Gospel and although they are still full of antics and are definitely rough around the edges the pageant ends up being memorable in more ways than one.

Hopefully this list will aid you in finding some new stories to add to your family's Christmas library. Are there any favorites of yours out there that I missed and should check out?

A Break from Work

I'm feeling the crunch right now to break from work. Getting things photographed and in the etsy shop has taken a lot out of me... business-wise things have been busier for me than ever before. That's good! I appreciate that. But I also recognize the need to slow down and focus on my kids, to be intentional with them throughout this season. I'm still trying to get a handle on balancing my own shop and home-life.

So, for right now, this pair of little shoes are not going in the shop. Instead, I plan on baking cookies with my kids and reading stories... of course, I'll still be packaging and shipping at this time, but I want to step back a little.

I'm thrilled to say that those little Christmas plaid overalls made it into this beautiful treasury! God has so many beautiful blessings for us this time of the year, things like this are just little extras.

We're ready to start decorating. We had our home-school Christmas Craftpaloosa Party at our home today. It was a blast and a blessing to have so many friends around us.

One of my biggest hang-ups with many kids' crafts is that it's nothing I want around my house. So, when looking for ideas for the day, (I found much of my inspiration on pinterest and etsy) I looked for things simple enough for kids but beautiful enough to display in my home. I think we found a great balance to the two.

Diego made the longest paper chain ever. I love the simplicity of it and the fact it's not made of construction paper. Old hymnals are awesome!

Now that the party is done, we'll get a Christmas tree and put it up! Yea... and drink hot cocoa because it's stinking awesome! (The kids kept coming back for more!)

Here's the recipe: 3.5 cups of sugar, 2.25 cups of baking cocoa, and a tablespoon of salt. Mix.
Add 2 tablespoons of mix to a cup of steamed milk. This is my kiddie version of my hot cocoa recipe... it's missing the heat.

To make my famous Spicy Mexican Hot Cocoa- add a table spoon of cayenne pepper to the mix! Yummo!

Vintage Ornament Wreath

Last year I oohed and aahed over Meg's wreath and promised myself I'd be scavenging for cheap vintage ornaments to do the same with this year. Then, by the time I got to go estate saleing again, well, I'd forgotten. But thank goodness for mommas who remember things for you! My mom pointed our three large bags of vintage balls for a great deal and I snatched them up.

Tonight, I finally had time to put together my new front door wreath. I'm pleased with the results!

Here's what I did-- just on the off chance you have ornaments laying around you'd like to use.

I made my wreath form out of cardboard (I place my wreath on my front door and behind my screen door, so this gives me more space for balls than a tradition straw or styrofoam form would).

After that, I glued vintage National Geographics photos to the back in a collage because the back always show through the window and therefore needs look interesting.

I painted the front of the form with gold paint.

And then painted some acorns that had popped from their caps... and glued them back in place. (Since I had the paint out anyway.)

After it dried, I added a ribbon, using Jesse's trusty hot glue gun that I now steal for all sorts of projects. Yes, that's right, my husband owns a hot glue gun. He doesn't craft with it--apparently they're used in construction too.

Then I started adding the biggest balls to the form and then layered from there.

Then, wal-lah! Done in about an hour, and finally there's at least one thing in my home decorated for the season! *sigh* Baby-steps, right?

God's

I've had my sister's camera for the past week. Again. It just takes much better photos than mine does. Even if it is still me behind the camera. Mainly I've been snapping away for photos for my etsy. But I also used it to take pictures for the new blog header... and then a few of everyday life.

I apologized to my sister for needing it again so soon after I last used it... and for needing it for such long periods of time when I take it. Her response: "It's not my camera, it's God's." I thought about calling her and telling her I dropped God's camera. Just to see her response. But she's been so gracious to begin with, that I suppose I shouldn't test her any further.

In the mean time, enjoy some of my favorite pictures from God's camera. And thank you, Elisabeth, for having such an open hand with your belongings. I want to be like you when I grow up.

The Culture of Christ at Christmas

(The Message)

Pastoring in Mexico does not bring in a lot of income. So , Christmases for my husband’s family were meager to say the least. We are talking about a family where the mother once broke a pencil into thirds so each of the kids could have a pencil to take to school– so it should come at no surprise that Christmases were sparse. Most Christmases consisted of a bag of peanuts with an apple or orange from the church, but Jesse will never forget the Christmas he received a matchbox car. What an extravagance!

Now, although my family was not well off, my childhood Christmases were an abundance compared to the picture above, so piecing our Christmas traditions together as a new family often created conversations that included things like:

Me: “What do you mean you feel strange asking for specific things? How will I know what to get you?”

Or Him: “You really want to do Santa with our kids?”

This clash of cultures was replaced with peace two years ago when we began to apply [AC] to our lives. No longer was it a question of whose culture was right. Instead, we asked: “What is the culture of Christ? What does God want our Christmas to look like?” Our spending has lessened significantly in response. Honestly, our kids have way more than they could ever need– without receiving a thing for Christmas. We are blessed spiritually and physically and that’s what we want our kids to know… and then share with others.

Preparing Little Hearts for Advent {Friday Favorites}

This is a follow up to yesterday's post, you can read it here.

There's a wealth of Christmas books on the market, but many of them are lacking... uh, Christ. And although we love us some good Sinter Klausen books around here, if we are going to instill the beautiful and grace-laden meaning of the season into our children, books about Christ's birth are a must at Advent. While there are some good Christian Christmas books currently on the market, there are really only a handful that have been written in the past five years that I have found good enough to purchase. However, there is a treasure trove of vintage Christmas books to be had.

When I personally look for children's books, I have to love the illustrations and then the words. Purchasing a children's books online is tricky because it's difficult to see what's written before purchase. Typically, I'll read the entire book to make sure it's something I want to read over and over again. Can I get an amen from anyone who's had to read a poorly written Thomas the Tank Engine or Disney book multiple times? I understand it's not always avoidable. So, when buying online I have to go on pictures and perhaps a bit of text.

Later next week, I'll show you a collection of more current books we have and enjoy around our house at Christmastime. But for today, I thought I'd show you a small sampling of what's available on Etsy. Some of these we own, some of them my momma read to me, and some of them may make it to our home very soon if I can scrounge up some change because, well, it wouldn't be Christmas without adding a book or two to our collection.

One of my favorite childhood memories was my momma reading to my brother, my sister, and me. I can’t even begin to calculate the hours that we spent snuggled up together and listening to her voice as she shared stories with us. And Christmas was the best… she would bring out an entire basket of Christmas story books that we would read over and over again. This teaching of Christ’s coming to earth to be among us (and that His coming was with a purpose—our redemption), made a huge impact in our spiritual lives. As an adult (especially working with inner-city kids—most of whom have unchurched parents), I’ve come to realize what a blessing it was that God gave me two parents who loved Him and taught me to love Him as well.

Now, I am the parent. It’s up to me to make meaningful times where I teach my children about the Lord (especially during Advent). We have our own basket of Christmas story books with beautiful illustrations of the Christ Child and we sit down and snuggle together to read about His plan to save us. And when I really think about what I want for my kids in the long run, it’s not expensive toys that they will get excited about for a few days… or a few months if I’m lucky. No, if that’s all I did for them at Christmas I wouldn’t be giving them much at all. I want to [Give More] than that. I want to give them Jesus, who loved them enough to be born so that he could die to save them, and whom they can be passionately excited about their entire lives. That’s how I’ll give more to my kids this Christmas.

Are you ready? I'm trying to be! Okay, getting ready in time for Black Friday (or Cyber Monday) didn't even happen. Who was I kidding? Seriously, I was incharge of coordinating plans for our Thanksgiving trip, making stuffing and pies for our Thanksgiving dinner, packing, getting ready to sell our car, and then of course our traveling woes on the way back. Honestly, when my cousin called and asked if I could watch her little boy yesterday I hesitated for just a moment.

He's just a few months older than Diego, so one would think they'd play together all the time. But silly us! that hasn't happened. I hesitated because we play with girls in this family. It's not that we try to avoid boys. On the contrary, I've tried numerous times to arrange boy play dates but it hasn't worked out. Other than our home-school group and church, Diego rarely sees boys his age. And it's exactly these places that made me hesitate. Boys are crazy when they get together! Like loud-crazy; like sword-fighting and bodily-function-crazy. And I'm in the midst of preparing my family to leave for Thanksgiving. And I'm unaccustomed to that kinda crazy.

But I said, "Yes." And I'm so glad I did! Yes, they were crazy... yes, there were a few bodily function words floating about that I had to put a stop to, and yes, someone did get pushed a bit too hard and bang his head. But I got to see a side of Diego that rarely gets a chance to come out to that degree. I mean, it's there all the time, but somehow Eliana seems to mellow it out with her desire to play tea party and mommy-daddy role play. Anyway, it was lovely... even when they spilled all the Legos all over the floor and then spent 30 minutes picking them up. They were having fun! And Diego, at the end of the day said: "Come back anytime!" What a blessing yesterday was!

Under a Rock, I Suppose

Being a stay-at-home mommy is somewhat the same as living under a rock, I suppose. How else can I explain that I've never heard of Sufjan Stevens? But Pandora got it really right this time on my Christmas music. I mean, seriously? Because I like 400-some-year-old Riu, Riu Chiu which is in old Spanish, that means I must want Mexican Polka Christmas music? Uh, no. And I don't really want Beyonce singing me carols either.

But back to Stevens. I don't think he'd be my go-to guy the rest of the year and I certainly wouldn't suggest taking theology lessons from him. He does have an album based on Chinese zodiac and I don't know what all else. Still I'm thoroughly enjoying listening to his Christmas goodies like this one. And I think I know what Christmas album to buy when I get a chance!

Blessings

The past 24 hours have been full of blessings:

I had a chance to spend a good amount of time talking to a girl friend of mine over coffee. She was gracious enough to accommodate me and the crazy demands of parenting by being willing just to come over and hang instead of asking me to meet her somewhere. It was wonderful; I was able to put kiddos to bed, do the dishes and talk about the Lord all at the same time. It was great to be encouraged in the Lord and to pray, laugh, and cry together.

Jesse was able to show the car to someone who seems seriously interested in purchasing it. Which means that we may soon be able to buy something that will fit our family better. We're still praying about that.

The kids and I had an opportunity to meet Oliver via skype today... he's absolutely precious and I'm just dying for a chance to see him in person! He's beautiful and was so alert! He had his eyes open looking at us... so much fun.

Pumpkin Cookies with the kids. (We just used a sugar cookie mix, half a can of pumpkin and some chocolate chips-- of course!) I've lamented the fact that Diego was allergic to pumpkin in the past, but it appears he's outgrown it and I can't even begin to express how grateful I am to be baking with pumpkin again. It's perfectly lovely.

Diego says "cookery book." One of the British terms he must have picked up from the days of Thomas.

We rarely watch Thomas anymore.

God has been moving in my husband's heart in some unexpected ways. Perhaps changing the path we walk down as a family... one I thought was pretty much set in stone. I do realize that God often moves in unexpected ways, but witnessing it so closely is always breath-taking and so full of joy and laughter. I'm always blessed to see how God is transforming some of my favorite people.

Another blessing, Little Man has finally fallen asleep! (He's been fighting afternoon nap.) Hopefully he'll rest for a while since he's still under the weather. We're going back to the doctor again bright and early tomorrow to hopefully find a solution to his yucky crud.

Babies

It sometimes seems that the whole world is having babies right now...

Case in point, meet Oliver.

He's my newest nephew, born earlier today.

But will I get to hold him and snuggle and get my baby fix? No, because my brother and sister-in-law are dumb and therefore moved to Florida. Love you guys anyway. Even if you do live in Florida. Did I mention it's dumb?

So this little guy will have to suffice. And he's not into snuggling. Or even holding still. In fact, most of the time if I try to hold him, he tries to wriggle out of my arms and quickly try to go climb up something like Diego's bed to prove that he indeed is not a baby but a toddler. Rotten kid. Perhaps if I swaddle him really tight it will take him a few more minutes to loosen himself before he's able to wriggle out of my arms. Nah, I probably shouldn't try it. But I might if I don't get a baby fix soon.

Come for a visit soon, Oli! We sure can't wait to meet you... especially Cruz.

The Bizness

To be honest, bizness has been slow around here. Perhaps it's that I haven't listed much recently, but the main level of my home is looking pretty awesome right now! (Ehhh, we won't discuss the disaster area that is called my upstairs.) And I had a super cool birthday party for a special one year old I know, so perhaps it's alright that things have been slower.

However, I do realize that Christmas is just around the corner, so I need to get my act together this week and get lots of stuff listed so that I'm ready for Black Friday because everyone shops etsy on Black Friday, right? No? Well then, Cyber Monday? and that'll give me a few more days right?

In the mean time, Etsy is trying to keep me busy because I got a message from their admin today telling me that they're featuring one of my items on Etsy Vintage! Hooray... and perhaps I did a little dance! Good thing you weren't here to see it because I can't say I'm graceful. Check it out here!

Granny and Grandad

Today I'm remembering my grandad who served our country so bravely... I wish I had known him better. Through his personal writings, I have had a chance to understand him more. (That's why I firmly believe writing your story is so valuable... whether in a blog or in a notebook!) He was a man of great character and conviction who served his country dutifully alongside many self-sacrificing men. For them I am grateful!

I'm remembering my granny, whose birthday is today. Who didn't have a fancy wedding because the man she loved was about to go off to war. Who said this was as close to a wedding photo as they came because the base where they were married would not allow photography. Who I knew well, and miss greatly!

A day at home is always nice... we've been having many of those with the cold and ickies already floating around! Most of the time, I'm more than ready to leave the house the second Jesse returns home from work, but I'm loving the present of being at home and just learning to be. Okay, I'll admit it, I've got Christmas on the brain. It could possibly have something to do with the December issue of Martha Stewart Living I received in the mail this week. Dreamy. And by dreamy I mean having an infinite amount of staff to do whatever projects I want to do but don't have time for.

Anyway, I want to be prepared this year... I wasn't last year. And I want to bake and make many of the gifts we'll be giving away this year. We'll see how it goes. Ahem.

Two Cups, A Bowl and My Boy

It's been a dreary day. Cold, dark, rainy. I don't mind at all. It can pour and the boy and I can hang out. Eliana woke up with a runny nose this morning. Cruz woke up from a 30 minute afternoon nap with a runny nose and low grade fever. They're finally laying down. Again. In the meantime, my big boy and I are enjoying hot chocolate, popcorn and a movie... and finishing up some illustrations for today's school work.

This weather makes me nostalgic:

It makes me remember drinking hot chocolate with my granny. She liked to make cinnamon toast sticks to pair with the treat. I miss her!
It makes me think of snuggling with my momma as she'd read us chapter books. The Little House books and Chronicles of Narnia and so many other wonderful treasures.
It makes me remember bowls of popcorn with my daddy--who still makes his popcorn the right way on the stove.

Unlike me who grabbed a bag and threw it in the microwave. It's alright. My boy's happy with it anyway. And I made up for it by steaming the milk for the hot chocolate. Salted, of course. Mine with cayenne pepper.

Snuggle with your babies, read a good book, share a treat, spend time, laugh together and make memories. It's the perfect weather to do so! Have a Marvelous Monday!

How can a year possibily have passed by so quickly? How is it this little life has gone from sleepy and quiet to noisy and mad-dash? I nursed him this morning for the last time. And now I'm going to cry about it. 8 weeks ago I was more than ready to give it up but persevered 'til today. But we're done. I miss it already.

Cruz, I love you for the smiles. I love you for the tears. I love you for the way you've changed my life. I love you for making me rely on God for the strength to parent you. I love you for your giggles. I love you for your strength. I love you for your weaknesses. I love you for your snuggles. I love you for the pain you've brought. I love you for the joy you are. I love you for the trials. I love you for the patience. I love you for you are mine. I love you for you are God's. I love you for you are a gift!

I'm so blessed! I have a terrific aunt and uncle who gave up their Francis Chan tickets for Jesse and I to be able to go hear him tonight. This guy's writing has challenged me so much... so it brought tears to my eyes when Jesse told me she had dropped them off.

I was super-excited to find that they had found another set and will be able to go themselves. I am also blessed by cool parents who are willing to watch my babies so we can go! Blessed, blessed, blessed! And there you go.

Transforming my Heart

Over the past few weeks, I've been mulling over how to teach my children about those with differences from a biblical perspective. I've been amazed how praying for my eyes to be opened so I can find out how to teach my children, has been much more about changing me. God has slowly been transforming my old ideas and giving more of His heart for all of His children.

A few weeks ago, Julie dropped into my life via BSF. We'd already had the opportunity to meet on a few occasions through a mutual friend, but now I had a chance to get to know her heart. Her heart is one set on adoption. God has set apart their super-sweet family to add one more to their brood in a way not dissimilar to the way God adds us to His family. Immediately, she asked for prayer in wisdom and guidance for whom to adopt. What a weighty decision to be faced with... so when she posted this last night, I could see how God has been working in her heart the past few weeks, but also, what she wrote also struck a chord in my own heart.

"Satan has built a variety of attributes/lies into our culture regarding the assignment of worth . . . and I have bought into them more than I ever realized. They are: beauty, intelligence, and achievement. Society gives more worth and more attention to pretty people-they are treated differently. Parents feel guilty if their kids aren't intelligent. We are told we are only as good as what we accomplish."

Ouch! These attributes which the world values... I have also valued. How many times have I been puffed up with pride at my daughter's beauty or my sons' accomplishments? Do they mean anything? No. They are temporal not eternal... and they could easily be taken away tomorrow through accident or illness. But Julie continues:

"Regardless of what special needs she may or may not possess, may the unchanging, unconditional love of God flood our chosen child's heart and define her worth. May we be faithful to teach her eternal values and demonstrate to her a glimmer of unconditional love."

Amen, Julie! Case in point? This little guy, Jude Matthew, who last week went to be with his loving Father. His life was too short to accomplish anything noteworthy by world standards. He will never be heralded by this world the way someone like Steve Jobs was. But I find so much worth in Jude-- an eternal worth! You see, with the exception of my own children, Jude has challenged my spiritual walk more than any other child through his parent's blog. God has used Jude to draw people to Himself and He has used Jude to transform them into someone more like Himself and that is full of worth! That is what I want to develop in my own children... a sense of worth found in Christ and bringing glory to His name.

This is the lesson that I need to learn before I am able to teach it to my children. I want to be (and then, my children to be) like the lame man in Act 14 who was so full of faith that Paul was able to see it just by looking at him! I want my own children to learn to find their worth in God, so it can never be stripped away from them! I desire to model that to them by putting my faith in God and finding my value in Him... nothing else!

But Christ has shown me that what I once thought was valuable is worthless. Nothing is as wonderful as knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. I have given up everything else and count it all as garbage. All I want is Christ and to know that I belong to him. I could not make myself acceptable to God by obeying the Law of Moses. God accepted me simply because of my faith in Christ. -Philippians 3:7-9 (CEV)

Ladies and Gentlemen; Boys and Girls

It's no fun to be sick on Halloween! But, Diego has never been good at picking great dates to be sick.

Today when he woke up and we realized his fever had returned, he burst into tears.

102 degrees this morning.

He knew it meant he'd miss his second Halloween event tonight.

So, I said, "It's okay, we'll still have fun today! Let's put on our costumes."

We've been wearing them all day long.

To the doctor's office where they checked him (again) for strep and took some other cultures.

Then on down to a nearby shopping area for photos.

We were supposed to do photos with Finley and Evie today, but scrapped that idea for fear we'd expose everyone.

Hopefully we'll be able to still get together for a photo shoot for the entire circus company on a later date because the outfits are only too-too cute altogether!

But it's a beautiful day!

And it was good to be outside and walk around. It lifted our spirits!

Sick? So what! We're rocking circus costumes in a shopping center!

In the meantime, we'll be stopping by to visit a couple of kid-less people after our naps which are in full costume of course... ever seen a tattooed strong man take a nap? It's completely adorable!

Our ring master is ever mindful of the fact that today is not his nap day and therefore, is just resting on the couch watching movies.

Forget school! It's totally not happening today. And I don't care because I'm completely exhausted!

Tonight

I'm thanking God for a sister who was willing to open her home to me and my littles during our unexpected arrival at her doorstep. "Surprise, we're here to hang indefinitely today!"

I'm thanking God for keeping my family and neighbors safe in a hostage situation that took place a block away from my home.

I'm thanking God that my little ones are tucked away snug in their beds and don't have an inkling of all the ugly sin that swirled around them today.

I'm thanking God for a reminder that, although our immediate neighborhood is a relatively safe "historic" district, a block or two in any direction there's a physical and spiritual battle that is raging.

I'm thanking God for providing us with a home that's so close to so many in need. In need of truth. In need of love. In need of life.

I'm thanking God for the reminder that we were given this home for His use, His purposes, His ministry. Not sure what that means for us right this minute. But, I'm sure He'll point out more ways to use this place for His glory.

I'm thanking God for holding us in His capable hands, for guiding us safely out of our neighborhood for a while this afternoon, and landing us safely back in our own comfortable beds tonight.

The Paul and Barnabas of It

I relate to Paul on a lot of levels. I love the black and whiteness of him. I understand his zealousness... sometimes misplaced. I get the struggle of head knowledge without heart change. I feel his call to the Gentiles... that took at least eleven years to come to fruition. Even though he knew the entirety of the Torah... he still had much to learn.

Then there's Barnabas. Awesomely, encouraging Barnabas. Yea, don't relate to him as much. I struggle to say positive, encouraging things. Especially to my family. But I have met my share of today's Barnes, and you know what? I always leave their presence feeling uplifted and ready to go back out and do more for the Lord. I've wanted to be more encouraging like them, but at the end of the day, I've always chalked it up to different personalities and left it at that.

Until a few days ago when I read my BSF notes and was struck with the question: "Would your family describe you as providing gracious, strong, and spiritual leadership?

Um, maybe not. Especially the gracious part.

Here's how Luke describes Barnes' visit to the Gentile believers:
When he arrived and saw what the grace of God had done, he was glad and encouraged them all to remain true to the Lord with all their hearts. He was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and faith, and a great number of people were brought to the Lord.

My notes described his visit as gracious: "He recognized and appreciated God's work in them."

Here's where it hits home for me. So often with all of my kids, but especially with this boy, I'm so busy looking at the present and future that I never look at the present compared to the past. I see a current sin struggle and we battle it out together. Me, with admonition, discipline and prayer. And him, with prayer, self-control, and spiritual formation. Then, when he's past that stage, I quickly move on to the next sin that pops to the forefront.

While all this is good and part of parenting, to help them through their sin struggles, I rarely go back and help my kids remember how they've grown in the Lord. "Look at how far Jesus has brought you at this young age. Look at what wonderful things God has already done in your life and how you've grown in Him!" I don't say that. I don't often recognize and appreciate the Lord's work in their lives.

But my kids don't always need a Paul in their lives... remember John Mark? Mark needed mercy and another chance. Barnabus was willing to give him that. Paul? Well, he was still a little rough around the edges in the mercy department. Was it just personality? Maybe, but God doesn't want us to remain just like us. Instead He wants us to become more like Him. And God, well, God is rich in mercy! And the God who eventually restored Paul and Mark's relationship, He can make me an encourager and full of mercy!

Teaching about Differences

If you've been around for a while, you may remember this post in which I asked for advice on teaching my children about people with differences from a biblical perspective. My thought on all of this was that hopefully I could teach my kids appropriate information and behavior before they got into a situation where they embarrassed themselves (or me) or hurt someone else with words or actions.

Well, a little over a week ago Diego noticed that one of the other coaches on another team was a little person.

Diego: I don't understand. I'm so confused. That man over there is a grown up and but he's short like a kid. Why?
Me: Um. I don't know, buddy. That's just the way God made him. He's not much shorter than I am. (Which is true because I'm five foot-nothing.)
Winning conversation, right? To be honest, I was just hoping he'd drop it and wouldn't carry the conversation on any longer. The last thing I wanted was for my kid to point out the man and talk loud enough that others could hear him. So I was grateful when that was enough to satisfy him.

However, I had been praying for opportunity to educate my kids about differences between people (physical and otherwise) and God was not going to let me drop the issue that quickly. So of course, when I opened the kids' Bible a couple of days later, we encounter the story of Zacchaeus.

It starts the story by telling how Zacchaeus didn't have friends because of his funny name or because he was short (because, of course those aren't good reasons to not like someone). Nope, no one likes him because he's a thief. In the end, Jesus goes to visit him because Jesus is an awesomely gracious God who loves us even if we're terrible people who steal. In light of the love and grace of Christ, Zachaeus repents. He gives back the money he's stolen plus more! God uses Zacchaeus to bring glory to Himself, just like He wants to do with everyone!

Diego and I spent some time talking about the coach and Zacchaeus... how God loves them just like He loves us. That God made them in His image just like He makes us each in His image. How God can use anyone to further His kingdom and bring fame to His name. So, there you have it, my first biblical perspective view of differences pulled straight from scripture. Who'd have thought? I know, I know... cut me some slack. I'm a slow learner.

Anyways, I'm super excited because I'm soon going to have a guest blogger who is an incredible mom to three and she will be sharing more on this topic! I am thrilled to hear her heart and insight on the subject... so stay tuned!

Small Business Organization {Friday Favorites}

Between Jesse's business paperwork, my etsy stuff, oh yeah and all this other stuff like schoolwork, and bills, this is what my desk looks like.

Did I mention that the school room is also my main office space. Oh yeah, and the playroom/laundry room? This room does too many jobs! And my desk shows it!

Right now, all most of my etsy stuff is in laundry baskets and tubs in my vestibule. Which is good because the kids really don't go in there and mess with merchandise.And is not good because this is what my vestibule (i.e. the first thing visitors see) looks like.

I seriously need organization. And I seriously need hours by myself of focused time so that I can get this put away without the kids messing with it while I do so.

So, when I saw this sweet treasury (that features my calculator!) I flipped! So awesome and so what I'd love my small business to look like one of these days... cute stuff that keeps me organized and makes me smile when I look at it. So, while I didn't create the treasury this week, it is definitely a favorite treasury for me because it inspires me to get organized once and for all. (Hopefully.)

Any organizational tips you'd love to share with me? I'm all ears!

The Class Clown

Yea, this little guy would be in so much trouble if he weren't home-schooled. Anything for a laugh!

He tells me, "I'm special because God made me funny." It's true. He brings much joy and laughter to our lives!

Sometimes, his funnies are like a bright mirror showing me my own actions and faults.

Diego: Mom, I'd like a chocolate milk.

Me: I'm sorry you can't. You already had one today.

Diego: Okay, then I think I'll take a venti milk.

(Perhaps, I ought to cut back on the ventis?)

Sometimes he's so funny it hurts.

(Like when he tries to give me a hard beso to make me laugh but bumps my nose in the process.)

I firmly believe he stores up funny things just to say for those times he's about to get in trouble.

"Diego, I told you to get the dust pan and sweep up that mess five minutes ago!"

"I can't sweep up that mess because I might accidentally eat a piece of trash and get sick."

Say what!?!

Diego, you're "be-dic-lee-ously" funny and lovable. I treasure the times I have with you.

I told Jesse this evening that I should have headed back to bed as soon as Diego threw up this morning. It's been a completely exhausting day. Physically and emotionally. We've been pushed, pulled and stretched. But we've definitely grown. And at the end of the day, we can say that we love our church more and that God is calling us to more than we thought. We're not quite sure what, but our hearts are open to the Holy Spirit's prompting. So, I guess I'm glad I didn't go straight back to bed... but I'm definitely ready for bed now!

stuff i learned

How was your weekend? Mine, not too bad. Other than some burned bacon and a girl who's fighting her naps. Here's a few things I've learned this past week.

Cruz is finally getting his eighth tooth... after having an odd number in his mouth for two months.

Going to the pumpkin patch is so much fun, and so tiring! You can see our trip here at my sister's blog.
Diego is getting better and better at drawing. Take a look at his mole!

All of a sudden, I'm looking forward to Christmas!

No one in my immediately family (besides me) likes split pea soup. It's really unfortunate.
Diego's soccer team this year does not have the same level of coaching as his team last year (read this as: we never practice as a team and his coach doesn't even give direction to the boys as they play). His team is not improving while the others in their league are. At the beginning of the year, they were all pretty much even but now they are getting creamed weekly. By the end of the game, he was near tears from sheer frustration. He plays whole-heartedly and does not even hear encouragement from his coach at the end of the game. This makes the mama bear in me want to appear. Right now, I'm praying about what we should do (if anything) about this scenario.

My nephew goes down for a nap much better when I remember to give him a pacifier. *duh!*

Diego has overcome his allergy to pumpkin! Which means we are enjoying baking so many yummy things with it right now! (We especially are enjoying pumpkin bread pudding with caramel sauce. *swoon*)
Eliana's heart is becoming more tender toward the Lord and she is beginning to ask more questions about salvation and sin. I'm praying for the day that her eyes will be opened to the gospel and that the Holy Spirit will allow her to grab hold of the gift of grace!

Absolutely loved my pastor's sermon on Sunday, I am being challenged on so many levels in his series on joy right now.

Catechisms and Differences

I have yet to start using catechisms with my kids, but the more I look at them the better I like them. Catechisms were not something that were taught in our home when I was a child but my parents did teach doctrine quite a bit through everyday conversation. However, one of the reasons I like the idea of teaching them is the intentionality of teaching doctrine that it brings to the table. I want my kids to grow up understanding all the basics of our faith and why we believe what we believe and this would allow me assurance that we've covered everything and would also give us a jumping off point to discuss theology in greater depth. More on this in a moment.

This is one of our new butterflies... okay, he's the only one so far. We have another in chrysalis form and another in caterpillar form right now that my former-middle-school-science-teacher aunt, Nine, brought us a couple of weeks ago. If you'll notice, one of his wings in significantly smaller than the other. What this means for this guy (or girl... I haven't really checked) is that he'll never really fly well. Which also means, I'm hesitant to release him outside for fear he'll be gobbled up immediately.

However, he has given my kids and I an opportunity to talk about physical differences. My kids have had limited exposure at this time to others with who are different, but I thought that this was a good time to look at something that was made by God slightly different. Is He still beautiful? Absolutely! Does He still have purpose? Yes! Which brings me back to catechisms...

Number three on this list goes like this:

Q. 3. Why did God make you and all things ?
A. For his own glory.

And that there is the point that my kids (okay, all of us really) need to understand. Everyone, everything is made for God's glory. Remember the story of the blind man in John 9? The disciples asked Jesus if he'd been born blind because of his own sin or because of his parent's sin. Neither, was Jesus reply. Rather, it was to demonstrate God's power by performing a miraculous healing in him. And that is one of the cruxes of Christian faith. All life is valuable because God has made us in His image in order that we may bring Him glory. It's what we all have been put here on this earth to do. There is true value in that.

So, where do I go from here to teach my kids more about those with differences? I'd love some suggestions. I've heard that Max Lucado's books are good ones to begin with and I've read some good things about this out of print one by Ken Gire. I'd love suggestions!

Sweeter than Honey

Your teachings are sweeter than honey. -Psalm 119:103

I spent my first Sunday in the church nursery since I "retired from children's ministry" this past weekend. It felt right and good to be "back" even though now it's all volunteer. Working with babies is so much different than teaching those you can actually carry on conversations with, nevertheless, I firmly believe they understand much more of what we say than they let on. :) That's why it's so important to begin speaking God's truths to them right away.

Do you share your faith with your baby? Here are some simple truths to bring to them:

As they chomp on that Bible boardbook, remind them that God's word is sweeter than honey.
As you hug them, share that Jesus loves the little children.
As you bathe your little one, talk to them about how Jesus washes away their sins.
As you give them a snack, tell them the story of the loaves and the fishes.
As they look in the mirror, remind them that God made them.
As you comfort them from a fall, remind them that there will be no more tears or pain in Heaven.
As they look at animals, tell them how God created the world and it's creatures.
As they go outside in the sunshine, tell them that Jesus is the light of the world.

Don't let those first minutes whiz by you without preaching the Gospel to the little one God has entrusted you with! Those days quickly run by and the next thing you know you have a three years old on your hands. Who, by the way, is not too young to start hiding God's Word in her heart:

And lastly, feed yourself! (I'm preaching to me too, here!) It is so easy to get bogged down with all that needs to be done: feeding, bathing, changing, cleaning... you get the drift! Remind yourself in those times when you don't think you have enough time that not only is God's Word sweeter than honey, it also gives much more sustenance and will get you through the tough times in your day!

Jesus answered, "The Scriptures say: 'No one can live only on food. People need every word that God has spoken.'" -Matthew 4:4

First silent e lesson today... it went much better than I anticipated.

Food rarely stays on the plate, but I was just happy it made it into her tummy today.

We're loving dot-to-dots right now. It counts as math, right?

Finally (a week later) I pulled the sheets out of the dryer. *sigh* I hate weeks where there's a load that looms over my head like a big black cloud.

I'm a mean and hateful mama for sticking him in the exersaucer and he's not afraid to let me know.

Finally content to be outside waiting for Papi's return and checking out the pumpkins.

garge sale

Don't you love how kids say garage? Actually, I think ours will be more of a yard sale because my sister's husband doesn't like the idea of us accidentally selling off his tools, or something like that. ;) We would never do something like that, Paul! Never! hehe...

Anyway, how do we spend our time getting ready for the sale? Marking our items? No, because that would make sense! Instead, my sister has spent an incredible amount of time making signs for the sale because... she looked online and there was nothing cool out there. Nothing. And if my graphic designer sister is going to make a sign then, well, it'd better be stinkin' awesome. Stinkin.' Awesome.

So, we'll be that sale that doesn't have their act together and everything labeled on the first day. But we'll also have reasonable prices because our goal for the sale isn't to make a million dollars but to simplify our lives. So, if you live nearby come and get some great deals on some uber cool stuff. Or just come by and say hi because I'd love to see you!

stuff i learned

It's been a great weekend, but I'm ready to get back into the swing of things and get ready for a garage sale in just a few days! Eep! Okay, I really need to get to work.

In the meantime, I wanted to share with you my stuff i learned post, something i hope will be a regular thing around here soon! So here it goes-

Stuff I learned this week:

Cruz is standing up by himself now (no more than a few seconds, but it's reminding me that this little one is nearing the age of toddler-hood. And quickly leaving babyhood behind. boo! I don't like that!

Eliana has somehow managed to learn how to write her name on her own. I showed her a few times a couple of weeks ago and she practiced writing it down, but I figured she was just learning to copy the shapes. Then she brought me this paper... she had nothing to look at, nothing to copy, absolutely no direction at all and still wrote it! I'm in love with the extra fingers on the E!

My sister is one incredible girl and she challenges me in my walk with the Lord... she has a project in the works that I hope to one day soon share with you. I'm excited to see how God will use it!

It's amazing how much difference a year can make! All through soccer season last year Diego struggled to keep up, to get in there, and to make a shot. This year he's the team star... ha! Okay, maybe that's a bit much but seriously, what a difference! I've also seen a side of competitiveness that will need to stay in check. His three ways to make a goal were, to get close to the ball, to kick it hard into the goal, and step on other players feet so they fall down. Er... um, no, you're not supposed to do that.

The drive-in theater with kids is fun, if: 1. You keep in mind that there's no way you'll watch the movie because you'll be trying to keep kids from climbing all over each other and keep the baby from eating the de-icer spray can. 2. You remember to pack more than one wipe. 3. You dress in clothes you don't mind getting super messy because you will be covered in cotton candy, Raisinets, and poop from the baby's diaper explosion because you only had one wipe. Uh, yeah, I know it's gross. I know very well. We will, however, be trying the drive-in again because the kids loved it. We may try to wait until we have a larger vehicle though. Let's all pray our Santa Fe sells quickly.

This Girl

Can be so bold and sassy and outspoken at home.

And then horrifically shy when out and about.

Now that Diego's moved to a different area, I'm having a hard time getting her to go to Sunday School.

Evie wasn't at BSF last week, so this week she didn't want to go back.

"I don't like anyone except Evie," she told me. "I don't know them."

And when there's more than one other playmate, she's usually the one left behind to play at mama's feet. She shies away and doesn't join the other two.

And this mama's heart is worried.

Worried that she'll hang back and always be the one left behind.

Worried that she sometimes seems sad.

Worried that tonight she'd rather sit by Mama than her Yaya.

Worried that her tender little heart has been somehow hurt.

Worried that I'm a little to worried.

Am I missing something obvious that I need to do with her?

Any advise from the experienced mommas out there?

On Owning a Vintage Shop

The worst thing about it is, wanting to keep everything I buy for myself. "It's mine, all mine!" a dark small voice cries inside. Not good, crazy little vintage monster, not good.

Especially when I try stuff on my kids... and it looks this super cute!

The best part, is my daughter beginning to break out of her shell in front of the camera. I love how she's finally relaxing and...

woah! posing? Where did she get that from? Must be those Florida cousins we saw a couple weeks ago.

When the greedy vintage monster starts to rear it's ugly head, I try to remind myself that I'm not buying anything that far in advance for Cruz and it won't fit Eliana for much longer.

And if it doesn't sell? Well then! I suppose Cruz may have a chance to wear it after all.

Isaac

A few months ago I mentioned how Jesse's big job had come to an end; then mine did too. Within a month of each other. I know, right? So, I was worried; and I tried to cast my cares upon the Lord the best that I could and muddle through. I thought it might be time for an update on that subject and to thank you for all your prayers and support. I'm not sure if I've mentioned on here before that Jesse works for himself in the construction/remodeling industry. It's actually been good for us for the most part. He's in school part time and he's able to set his own hours so that he can work around his crazy class schedule. I'd love to tell you that he's landed a ginormous remodeling job that'll keep him busy until he's graduated, but that's not the case.

What I can say though, is that God's been taking care of us. There have been weeks without work, and then weeks with work. There was a freak accident in which a moving company ran over newly laid sod which, in turn, has led to more jobs with the accident-prone moving company. There have been friends that have kindly thought of Jesse when they've needed work done and there have been a couple of times when family has blessed us with groceries.

Through all of this, I can see God's hand. I can truly say now, in the midst of financial struggles, that God does own the cattle on a thousand hills and that He surely has us in His hands. This is not the prosperity gospel. We do not believe that God has to help us make our house payment in order to somehow reward us for trusting Him with our future/tithing/being obedient, good little Christians. And I suppose that tomorrow (okay, perhaps the day after tomorrow... don't worry too much, Mom!) the bottom could fall out and we could have to sell our home or be foreclosed on. But for right now, He is supplying all our needs and even some of our wants from time to time.

Have we struggled? Absolutely! Have I questioned my calling to be a full-time stay-at-home mama? At times. But only for a few brief seconds. I do realize that if God calls us to something, He will provide. Today I sat through BSF and heard yet again "God will empower you to do the work He has called you to." And certainly He has. He has called me to train my children in Him and He is providing us with the means to do so. Sometimes, one day at a time, but nevertheless, He is literally giving us our daily bread.

It is something I have never wanted to do... pray that prayer so literally but one I am learning to love. It has been fun to watch and see just how He's going to do it, and then sometimes, He just blows us away by His generosity toward us. One of those times has something to do with the dress. (I hope to one day explain more about it. But for right now, I'm just watching and waiting to see what God does with it.) Still, it's laugh out loud amazement at how God works whenever I think of this dress. I could name this dress Isaac, I suppose.

I've been hearing a lot about suffering over the past month. All over the place. It's gotten to the point I find myself laughing when I read or hear something new. At first, I thought, "Oh, I really needed this because it's timely." But I've grown to realize the trials that our family is experiencing are minimal compared to other families. Now I sometimes, think, "Here's that same thread again about suffering... is there a bigger trial coming my way?" Some might say that's not a good question to ask as though somehow you're asking for it when you say that. But here's the kicker: If necessary, I am. I'm willing for more trials if it will bring me closer to Him.

That's what life is all about- Christ. Knowing Him, glorifying Him, making His Name great is what it's all about. And so, if I can some how know Him more in the midst of suffering shouldn't I ask for suffering? If His Name is glorified through a trial I face, should I not go beyond the step of just looking for the good He's working through it and ask for more? No, not: "Send me more trials, God." But: "Use whatever means necessary to grow me closer to You and to bring glory to Yourself."

Do I dare to pray it? Do I dare not? Well, as I was reminded today, Jesus is returning and I should act like it. So, pour it on, God! I want to grow closer to You through whatever means necessary. I want You to be able to say, "Well done, good and faithful servant" upon Your return!

Back to School

I know, I know, it's mid-September and we're just now starting school. But hey! one of the benefits of homeschooling is arranging school around your family's needs; that allowed us to vacation at a time when there was fewer people. (Always a bonus in my book!)

I left a bag of school supplies on each kids' place mat for them to discover this morning at breakfast; they loved it! You would have thought it was Christmas hearing them squeal over 25 cent glue sticks. It set a really good mood for the morning and they were stoked to start school. This year, I decided to start Eliana in Pre-K. I wasn't exactly sure how ready she'd be. But I found some curriculum books for super cheap that she could use while Diego is working on his book work, and she's thrilled that she has her own books that Diego isn't allowed to touch!

I decided to continue with our picture tradition. Here's last year's. It's amazing how much they've grown. I love how this picture captures their personalities at this time so well. I do not love how grainy it is. Oh well.

Jesse put up our chicken wire wall this morning. The kids are already about to fill it up with stuff. I'm glad to have the space so I can figure out what to do with some of their work. This gives us plenty of room to display at least for a day or two before I take it down and trash it. That's the hard part for me... trashing their work. I'd love to be able to keep every piece forever. That would be a bit much though. I know. Diego insisted that one of his most recent Thomas pictures be in the shot with him. Love this boy!

Eliana, was spinning in circles and was in a really great mood for photo taking. Wish my baby camera would have caught it... but it's all a blur. I finally got her to stay still for long enough for this. She's getting so big!

And Cruz; he was so good and slept during the time we did our seat work. Phew! He stayed in his jumper during story time. Perhaps I should hold him, but seriously, he is known to destroy books within seconds. He's not joking when he says he's here to eat paperwork! And me, well, I'm not joking either. There are times when I think to myself: "What am I doing? Put him in school right now!" But more days are good than not, and this is one of the good ones. I want to seal today in my memory for the days that are a challenge.

Hitting the Ground Running

This is the mother of all weeks. Not only do I have the after-vacation explosion of suitcases to deal with (you mommas know what I'm talking about, right?), but this is the week that everything begins for us. BSF-tomorrow, school-Thursday, Diego's soccer practice Thursday evening, home school group- Friday, first soccer game- Saturday.

Am I ready? You bet not! Will we muddle through? Of course, but not without a complete revolt from my body. After writing the first week and a half of lesson plans in the car on the way home, installing the new printer that came in the mail yesterday, getting etsy stuff ready to ship off, and dealing with part of the mess that threatens to completely envelop us, my brain had enough. I woke up this morning with a stinkin' crazy migraine. Tried to make coffee, but couldn't see the cup and the jug well enough to pour and poured half a cup of milk on my pant leg and another half on the floor. Finally got it made and my stomach was doing too many flip-flops to actually drink it. "Too late, too late!" my head screamed at me.

Fortunately, my super hero husband stepped in and took over the kids. Finally, after taking two, and then one more 'cause I couldn't remember taking the first two (woah! that's bad) Excedrin Migraine, and sleeping on the coach while the kids quietly ate their breakfast far away from me, I'm recovered. Apparently three and a nap is the trick for a super-speedy recovery. And we were ready to go for the afternoon. So, the zoo sounded good so I could escape the mess of clothing that still exists in my living room for a while. Now, off to conquer mount living room mess!

A Day at Disney

Little Man, you giggled through It's a Small World After All... loved all those chubby little faces! I loved watching your eyes shine with delight at the colors, sounds and sights all around. You were exceptionally good. But really didn't sleep the entire time you were there. Except while nursing. At which you took a couple of fifteen minute naps. There was just too much for you to take in and you refused to miss any of it if you could help it. By the end of the day, you were sick of your stroller... I think it was too conducive to sleep for your tastes at that moment. It was so much fun to watch you discover!

Eliana, your eyes sparkled at the princesses, but honestly, you just wanted to know about the castles. (I guess you love unique and large pieces real estate just like your mama.) You told me you loved all the princesses... except that one that threw trash on you and that next time you saw her you'd throw trash on her. "What?"... and then I realized you were talking about the fairy godmother that showered you with glitter confetti as she went by in the parade. When I tried to convince you that it was pixie dust, you quickly rebutted with: "I can't fly!" Little girl, you make me laugh so hard I cry! I love you!

Diego, your favorite part was the rides... you went on some pretty serious ones! You're growing up and met all height requirements for anything you thought you wanted to ride. You told me all of the rides were your favorite part, except for the "one with the Christmas song over and over" (it's a small world). That ride was too long and boring for you. You loved the Peter Pan's Flight and Splash Mountain rides though! You also monopolized the time with the princesses at the meet and greet session. Your uncle Josh thinks you'd be excellent at Speed Dating. Oh my! It was pretty ridiculous... I loved watching you with them. You are a funny guy!

This trip has been so much fun, but so difficult to make without your papi here. We are grateful to Yaya and Grandpa for taking us and it was so much fun to watch you play and experience Disney World with your cousins, but it will be good to be back home in a few more days and see him once again!

Sharing a Room

I'm sharing a room with my kiddos this week as we're in Florida together. I can't sleep. I'm just too thrilled listening to their little breaths in and out. The little whistle from Cruz's congested nose. Eliana's snore before she rolls to her back. The flutter of smiles (I wonder what their dreaming about). The little whimpers (prayers for peaceful sleep). All of it. Wonderful sounds. So thankful for these little ones who challenge me. Brighten my days. Make me exhausted. Fill me with wonder at the beauty and grace that God extended to Jesse and I when He allowed each of them to enter our lives.

About a year ago I stumbled across Babiekins online magazine and was wowed with the stunning imagery and layout of the perfectly beautiful pieces. Looking at the photos is akin to walking into an enchanted forest filled with exquisitely appareled little ones. But like a dummy, I didn't mark the website, forgot the name, and couldn't find my way back. :( That won't happen again now that I've found them again! Mainly a children's fashion magazine, the clothing they highlight is a mixture of high end original pieces and vintage. Gorgeous! Just beautiful! They also have a blog, their most recent piece is about children's fashion on a starving artist's budget. Something many of us can certainly relate to! You'll love what you see... go and enjoy!

Say Goodbye

We're saying goodbye to summer and hoping that it is saying goodbye to us, too! The hundred+ degree weather should leave about the same time as the kids and I take off for Florida... and it's forecast to be in the 80's! when we return.

That means goodbye to some of Eliana's sweet dresses, too. She's beginning to grow! She's put on 2 pounds in about 6 months-- which is awesome because the 12 months before that she put on no weight at all. She's my tiny, petite thing, but at 3 and a half she's finally going to have to say goodbye to all her 24 month and 2T clothes! It's a bitter sweet thing. I love so many of her outfits... and there's no girl following her in the line-up. Unless... she keeps on praying the way she does. This girl is also a determined prayer warrior about a particular subject. She's praying hard for a baby girl. Ha! We'll see about that!

This spunky girl loves to choose her own clothes. Today she insisted on wearing this dress by Penelope Mack.

Then, paired it with her Keens she received from her cousin, Evie. She wears her Keens all the time right now. She loves them! She loves purple.

She wants to paint Jesse's Jeep purple. And the play house. (I don't think either of those are going to happen.) And now that the Jeep is up and running and the weather is cooler, it's back to work on the play house!

We fully expect it to be complete when we return from Florida, Jesse. Chop, Chop. Just kidding!!! (Sorta.)
